However, most patients with solid tumors harbor circulating antitumor antibodies and most tumors contain a population of infiltrating B cells implying an association between oncogenic events and B-cell activation. B-cell immunity can be beneficial by providing antibody-mediated protection from oncogenic viruses or a source of recombinant tumor-specific antibodies that can be used in combination with chemotherapeutic regimens. However, activation of B cells may also be detrimental to an effective antitumor response. Tumor-reactive antibodies and B cells often recognize antigens that are generated during the unscheduled apoptotic and necrotic death processes, which accompany tumor progression and may be involved in wound-healing processes that promote tumor growth and impair protective T-cell responses. Therefore, methods to eliminate autoreactive B cells, or switch them to a B effector-1 (Be-1) phenotype that amplifies Th1/Tc1-type T-cell responses, which are typically associated with effective antitumor responses, may improve the clinical outcomes of T-cell-mediated immunotherapies. Possible strategies include the administration of B-celldepleting monoclonal antibodies, use of targeted B-cell stimulatory agents such as Toll-like Receptor agonists, and adoptive transfer of large numbers of ex vivo generated tumor-reactive Be-1 cells.

CD93 is Selectively Expressed on Human Myeloma Cells but Not on B Lymphocytes

Background: CD93 has originally been known as a C1q receptor, and many studies have demonstrated that CD93 is expressed on hematopoietic stem cells, B cell progenitors, myeloid and monocytic cells. Moreover, CD93 is shown to be expressed on long-lived plasma cells, and CD93 deficient-mice display an impairment in plasma cell development. Objective: To investiga...

FoxP3+ Regulatory T Cells in Peripheral Blood of Patients with Epithelial Ovarian Cancer

Background: Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of death from malignancy in women. CD4 +CD25+FoxP3+ regulatory T (Treg) cells are a subset of T lymphocytes with great inhibitory impact on immune response. Objectives: To investigate the percentage of CD4 +CD25+FoxP3+ regulatory T cells in the peripheral blood of the Iranian patients with epithelial ovarian cancer compared to healthy women ...

IL-17 and IL-4 Producing CD8+ T Cells in Tumor Draining Lymph Nodes of Breast Cancer Patients: Positive Association with Tumor Progression

Background: CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes have been recently divided based on their cytokine expression profile. Objective: To evaluate the percentages of CD8+ lymphocytes and their effector subsets including Tc1, Tc2 and Tc17 in the tumor draining lymph nodes (TDLNs) of patients with breast cancer. Methods: Single cell suspensions were obtained from TDLNs of 42 patients with breast cancer. Stai...

CD8+ T Lymphocyte Subsets in Bladder Tumor Draining Lymph Nodes

Background: Cytotoxic CD8+ T cells, as essential parts of the adaptive immune system, play pivotal roles in anti-tumor immune responses. It is well documented that cytokine expression profiles and activation status of these cells during anti-tumor immune responses affect the outcome of host-tumor interaction. Objective: To investigate the percentages of CD8+ lymphocytes and their subsets in...

IgM, IgG, IgA Serum Levels and Lymphocytes Count Before and After Adenotonsillectomy

Background: Tonsils and adenoids are involved in both local immunity and immune surveillance for the development of immune defense mechanisms. A number of investigators have found decreased immunoglobulin levels after adenotonsillectomy while others have failed to find significant changes. The effects of adenotonsillectomy on the cellular immunity of children have not been investigated extensiv...

Investigation of NK Cell Population in Peripheral Blood and Tumor Lesions of Patients with Breast Cancer

Background: Alteration in peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) is usually investigated to provide an evidence of the host immune responses to tumor antigens. The tumor infiltrating NK cells interact most closely with the tumor cells and more accurately reflect tumor host interactions. Objective: To analyze peripheral blood and tumor associated Natural Killer (NK) cells in patients with breast ca...
